Install any retrieving software onto removable media like a CD or flash drive. You should not do anything with the damaged drive, except when the retrieving software tells you to, in order to keep intact the files that are still there. You can always purchase a new larger external hard drive and have your scheduled backups operating again. However it is comforting to know that there is a little software package like card recovery software just in case we need it.
